What should be the first few steps in switching to an organic lifestyle?
My family and I have decided to add more organic foods into our diet for health reasons, but the organic food store is an hour away. We want to make the switch slowly right now, and wanted to know what our first steps should be. Is there an area of organic eating that should be implemented first (for example, organic meat or produce or dairy products)? I can get some items at our local grocery store, but want to know what I should be picking up when we head to the organic grocery store once a month.

First things first- organic dairy or slowly cut dairy out completely. The hormones, blood and pus cells found in factory-farmed dairy is enough to make even the strongest stomach shudder. Try an organic rice or soy milk in foods where the taste isn’t a major issue (cereal, baking etc- rice milk in coffee can be a shock to the system the first time!)
Organic veg. Eat LOCAL grown organic veg and eat ‘with the seasons’. More eco-friendly in about a million ways, and more trustworthy than so called organic foods in supermarkets.
If you want a healthy lifestyle, cut out the meat. You don’t have to listen to what I have to say, but if it is your families health that has been your primary reason for going to organic, then you need to think carefully to whether or not you are comfortable with exposing your family to the risks from red meat (heart and stomach disease) and the poisons present in fish.
Find a spare patch in your garden (or pick up one of those big tubs) and grow your own herbs. Seriously easy and very healthy!
Also, you can buy a ‘sprouter’ for your kitchen so you can grow your own alfalfa etc really easily and cheapily and the health benefits are out of this world!
Finally, consider one of the local organic-box schemes (you sign up, and a bag/box of organic-grown veg is delivered to your door every week!) and good luck/well done with this positive change! The taste in organic veg in casseroles comapred to standard veg etc is unbelievable!
BTW, organic doesn’t have to be expensive. The supermarkets charge a fortune for organic (which aren’t always organic!) foods because they know people will pay good money for their health. Local organic schemes are far cheaper.

Probably the easiest switch is to organic vegetables and fruits, which are often seen in stores even when certain fruits are not in season. The cost can be exorbitant though.

Good Luck……
Unfortunately to eat healthy is expensive. Isn’t it a shame. And it’s wondered why there is obesity!
Try tapping into your area’s local farmer’s markets and natural food stores and look for free range meats and egg products. Other than that, I don’t know what you look for other than products that state their organic…..if that can be trusted, I don’t know.

you should start easy. Flushing your system is also important to rid your self of toxins. I use the last day of the week to drink only distilled water, nothing else all day long. Just buy what you would normally buy at the regular food store, but be prepared for a substantial difference in the cost…..as much as doubled. You may be better off to go with your local farmers market. Try growing your own, that way there you know what your getting. It’s a lot of work but the savings is incredible, and grow things that store well in the winter months, like all root type veggies. Start small at first, and do your home work, Mother Earth News is a good source of info.
