If you tell someone to try a natural, organic diet free of preservatives and chemicals, they resist it, but will pop a pill of even more toxic stuff? I was in seriously poor shape two years ago with a multitude of problems, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, hidradenitis and thyroid problems. When I stopped eating processed food, and eliminated wheat, soy and eggs from my diet, the symptoms cleared up. I wonder why many people don’t realize the toxins that are in commercial meats, milk and processed food? All you have to do is read the label to see how bad it is!
I enjoy a lovely diet of fresh, organic veggies, rice pastas, fruits, fish, seafood, rice, quinoa, millet, flax, nuts, seeds, berries, etc. I dont feel deprived at all. Its the toxic artificially enhanced stuff that I am refering to. My diet is much more enjoyable and :"comforting" to me now, and my 12 year old is thriving on it!

We just moved to the US with our 7 months old daughter. From nutritional guidelines in Germany we are advised to not only feed rice cereal but also millet and spelt. I prefer the wholegrain/organic variety.
As it turns out, I haven’t been able to find these anywhere, all I could find was rice cereal and oatmeal, wheat and barley. All varieties that I would use later or not at all (wheat, bec it is supposed to be allergenic).
Do you have any suggestions for me or is that just how you do it?

So it seems I am an old-fashioned thinker or something. I read What to expect along with a lot of other baby books, magazines, and internet sites, and frankly- I don’t follow the trend. I use a crib bumper, I don’t do baby wear. I tried to breastfeed but it didn’t work out, so I use formula. I don’t buy organic ANYTHING (unless it’s on sale and cheaper than what I usually would get- but that has yet to happen). I use disposable diapers, and i do a host of other things that would probably make most mommies cringe- like not wash a brand new outfit before putting it on baby!

I have 4 cousins that have babies, and they do everything by the book… Everything from buying all the ‘right’ baby essentials, to making homemade baby food. Cloth diapering, organic clothes, wipes, food… for petes sake, one of them posted an article about how Johnson & johnson products are unsafe and contain formeldyhide! *sigh*

So ranting aside.. is there anyone.. ANYONE who is like me and loves and takes care of their children, uses common sense, but doesn’t follow the trends or the hype?

Please tell me I’m not alone!
I guess I should explain.. it’s not that I am against anything per se, it’s just i have chosen wheat I think works best for my family, and most of the time, what I think is best isn’t what the ‘experts’ believe is best. Oh well.. to each his own. i just can’t stand getting repremanded for my choices when they are just that- CHOICES!
PS- Yes, I do research on things when something comes into question, but usually (such as in the J&J thing) I blow if off as media hype.

♥Riyen’s Mom: no, I don’t think I am at all better than anyone! In fact, quite the opposite, I feel like I am somehow lost in the mix because i don’t always understand the new ‘rules’ to parenting. To me, some things just don’t make sense. And if it doesn’t make sense, I don’t do it until it does. Why is it any mom who disagrees with me on here says something to put me down? I have never said anything bad about anyone or anything.

I am thinking about starting a daycare in my house, but am unsure how much to ask. I was thinking about the following:

Hourly: .50/hour
½ day (5 hours): .25 (.25/hour)
Full day (10 hours): .00 (.00/hour)
Weekly (50 hours): 7.50 (.75/hour)
Monthly (200 hours): 0 (.50/hour)

I would also charge per day for meals and snacks, which would be all organic (more expensive than conventional food)

Does that sound ok?

Also, any advice on starting an at-home daycare?
The reason why I want to charge for meals/snacks is that I am currently baby-sitting a 21 month old full time, and her mom puts a lot of food restrictions on her (no eggs, dairy, wheat, corn, etc…, and that’s by choice, not because of allergies), and it makes mealtime complicated, because she’ll see that she’s not eating the same thing than my son and I, and feels left out. I just feel sad for the poor girl. I also dont want kids to be bringing junk food, so by charging, I can make sure that there is no fighting for food, and that nobody will feel left out. My daycare will be vegetarian (even tough I am not. I just makes it easier, as there are lots of vegetarians in my town), but I want to be able to serve eggs and dairy, and all that.
