I have a few questions about organic clothes and bedding and cribs.?

Does anyone use organic clothes and bedding for their newborn? I have been doing so much reading and think I would feel guilty if I didn’t…especially the bedding. And is it safe to have crib bumpers in the crib with a newborn? is it ever safe? Does anyone use organic mattresses, bedding, and all natural wood cribs? Natural cribs seem hard to find an expensive. I am afraid of buying just any crib with the chemicals and gasses from the chemicals. Thoughts, opinions on all of that?

I don’t think you need to feel guilty about not buying organic. If it is something that is important to you, then do it if is affordable for you. There are many things in our everyday lives that you can beat yourself over the head about and trying to protect your child from them is one of them. Society as a whole is loaded with chemicals and you can’t put your kid in a plastic bubble or drive yourself crazy over what to do.
Here is an interesting blog on chemicals http://www.stlbeds.com/articles/2009/08/20/is-there-a-carcinogen-in-my-mattress/ in mattresses.

I am the same as you & read a lot about toxic gases & the connection to SIDS etc. For me, I think the most important part is the mattress & I bought a all natural mattress it’s coconut coir & is very breathable & I feel the breathable aspect is the most important part of that so that the mattress gets air & you don’t have to worry about the baby too much when they start to roll over or breathing in too much carbon dioxide from a non ventilated room. The bedding & sleeping wear depends on your budget, but I don’t feel it’s necessary, as long as it’s all cotton & is washed well in a natural laundry liquid (don’t use a chemical one, get a natural one from the health stores etc). Keep the room ventilated or if that’s not possible have a fan circulating the air. Wood crib would be good but again it depends on your budget & if you have the natural mattress that’s the most important part. Even if you can’t afford a coconut coir or similar you can get mattress covers eg – http://www.eves-best.com/babesafe-mattress-covers.htm. As for the bumpers, there are ventilated bumpers that are fantastic, if the baby gets pressed against it they can breathe straight through, these would be the only kind I would recommend. Don’t feel guilty if you can’t afford all organic, feel proud of yourself that you’re even bothering to do the research in the first place! So many Mums don’t even realise they shouldn’t use the bulky cot bumpers, they just think "they look pretty"! You’re doing a great job! :)
