How important do you think it is to feed your baby organic food?

I’ve been reading articles lately about how preservatives in food cause little girls to mature faster. Girls are getting breasts/their periods earlier and earlier (as early as age 7 or 8!) and it is being linked to chemicals/preservatives in a lot of food these days…
Do you feed your baby only organic food? Do you think it really makes a big difference? Or is it more for peace of mind that you do it?

I try to give my son as much organic as possible, but even more important, I think, is as much fresh, unprocessed food as possible. Look for local suppliers (farm stands or farmers markets) and real EVERY label – even on baby food. Check out The Omnivore’s Dilema, by Michael Pollen for more info on organics and what to eat.
I am careful, too, to make sure food is grown in the US – for example, a lot of bottled juices are made from concentrates from other countries, like China and Turkey – I don’t see any reason to buy apple juice from China, when we have plenty of apples here in the US.
I do think it makes a difference – our children are constantly exposed to environmental toxins that no other generation has ever had to live with (plastics, pesiticides, hormones, etc.) I think every thing you can do to minimize your child’s exposure will benefit you child’s development now and his/her health in the long run.
It also matters what you SERVE your child’s food in, as toxins can leach into food and drink from plastic containers – check out safemama.com for more info.
And then, once you are sure your foods are in the clear, take a look at your shampoos, soaps, sunscreens and cleaners…that’s another place that your child can come into contact with not so kid (or people!) friendly chemicals!

I plan on doing it for meats and dairy only. They give the animals growth hormone these days, and that’s what’s causing it. Everything else should be fine non-organic, but some people just prefer it.

I did a lot of research on this category and pesticides and preservatives play a huge role in foods. I only give my daughter organic food and formula (similac). It is a personal decision, but research it and you will be disgusted with what regular foods might contain. After about 6 months old, i started giving her regular foods as well, because there is not a great selection for older babies in organic.

I feel the same way as the other answerer. I buy organic milk and meats, and somtimes other products, but they’re so expensive I just buy what I can…but I think those are the most important things to buy organic due to the growth hormone injected into cows and other animals.

I’ve heard of the importance of buying organic especially for root vegetables like: carrots, potatoes, …. because their being in the soil would make them more prone to chemical infection if grown in non-organic soil.
However, not all food source is available in organic form, and certainly price plays a very important factor too. I tried my best when feeding my then toddler healthy baby food that I make myself from scratch. It’s always better to make your own than to buy store bought baby food in jars.

It does make a big difference. I’m having to eat more organic for health reason…the more research I do the more I see the need to eat organic. I often buy my daughter more organic food than for me.

My DD has been on the Gerber organics since she could eat them. I intend to stay organic with her. There is so much cancer lately and teens are so "well endowed" now I want to give her the best start I can.

I wish all our food were organic. I think it sucks that we have to go around looking for natural food without pesticides, growth hormones and tons of preservatives. I started by making my baby’s baby food using organic veggies. Now that she is 15 months, I still try and buy a lot of organic food. They are more expensive, but at least they are more readily available in the grocery store now. I try and always buy little snacks that are organic, and I by organic milk for myself. Meat is especially important to buy organic. Even though these things are more costly, think about how you are saving your family from health inssues in the future.
